Confessions from the Massage Table.

Wow.

You really listened.

Not many do that.

My client said these words to me after her session today. She was quiet and reserved during our initial intake, as though there was a bit of uncertainty about me, almost a trust thing, as though she'd been through so many massage therapists before and been left feeling unheard, and was I just another one of those massage therapists. Intuitively, I felt this from her words, and I listened to the message her body was giving me as she spoke.

She needed hands that knew her body, even though this was the first time we had worked together, and in a 90-minute session. She did not know how to say these words, yet her body knew how to say them for her to me.

Each pass of the warm salt stones over the tense areas she spoke of gave her permission to let down her guard. Every knot paid attention to gave her assurance that she was in good and caring hands. Warm towels to prepare her feet for massage finally gave her what she needed to know to surrender to complete relaxation - her body was being heard for the first time in a long time, and she could fully let go into the session because she didn't need to stress about being able to relax.

Her words are powerful.

Are you present during your sessions?

Are you really listening?
