OM 101
The other day, I had a fantastic back facial, and the esthetician asked me what the symbol was in the middle of my back; I’ve got an entire back tattoo, and the OM symbol is in the middle. My response to her was that it’s the symbol of Universal Oneness – that we are all One – in connection with the Divine.
And then, realizing how non-lamen that sounded, I quickly added—it’s a symbol that helps me out when things aren’t going as I want them to and helps me manage things more easily.
This short article is OM 101, where you’ll learn the basics of symbols and sounds and how to incorporate them into your daily life.
==>The Basics of OM<==
There’s no word-for-word translation available because OM has no direct translation. In a simplified spiritual explanation, the OM symbol is a syllable that is the sound of the universe and connects you with the Divine, the Highest, and the Source of all Creation. The sacred vibration of the syllable OM comprises the entire world—the past, the present, the future, and beyond. OM transcends threefold time and space.
The first mention and origin of OM is in the written text of the Upanishads.
In Hindu tradition, the OM symbol refers to Atman -the soul or self within- and Brahman -the entirety of the universe, the ultimate reality, the force behind all creation, and the all-knowing cosmic knowledge.
OM vibrates and resonates with the Earth at 136.1 Hz. It represents the cycle of life, death, and rebirth, thus connecting you with all that is, was, and will be.
Each part of the OM symbol-🕉️-Represents Reality in Various States.
The large lower curve represents your waking state of mind, Jāgrat; the smaller upper curve represents your unconscious state of mind, Sushupti, and the middle curve denotes your dream state of mind, Swapna.
The dot represents enlightenment, Turiyā, and the crescent, Maya, represents the illusion that attaches you to the material world and separates the lower, upper, and middle curves from the dot of enlightenment.
==>Incorporate OM in Your Life <==
You can easily incorporate the symbol and sound into your life to reconnect with your awareness. You can put an OM screensaver on your phone or computer to remind you to pause and reflect. You can also find a YouTube OM recording and dedicate a few minutes to listening to it daily.
To receive maximum and profound benefits, it’s a good idea to choose one method—meditating on the OM symbol or listening to an OM recording—and commit to it daily.
==>Chant Om to Harness Wisdom<==
Chanting OM invites you to experience a personal and spiritual connection to the Divine.
In Hindu traditions, OM is pronounced AUM and has four parts to its sound. Just as each part of the OM symbol represents your various states of reality, so does the sound.
1. The A:
Pronounced AH, this sound represents force and source of creation, everything in it, and where all sound originates.
It helps you connect to your sense of self.
As you chant AH, it initially produces a sound in your throat; then, the sound travels to where your tongue is rooted in the back of your mouth and begins to resonate deeper into your lower abdomen.
2. The U:
Pronounced OOOH, this sound represents the perpetual energy of the universe, the subtle impressions of your mind, and invites you to connect with something more profound than you.
It helps you experience clarity, lightness, good, ease, and balance.
As you chant OOOH, the sound moves from your tongue and palate up to your lips and begins to vibrate deeper into the center of your torso.
3. The M:
Pronounced MMM, this sound represents the transformational energy within the universe, the beliefs and thoughts you hold, and your interconnected awareness of Oneness.
It helps you slow down to feel this vast connection to all that is, was, and will be.
As you chant MMM, the sound is made by closing your lips and vibrating deeper from the top of your head.
4. The Silence:
After you chant OM, a nonverbal pause occurs. This pause represents Suriya, or Infinite Consciousness, which symbolizes the pure and absolute consciousness of self and surpasses your material form of being.
It helps you to experience yourself beyond you.
This silence is the peak of the OM chant, and at this point, you connect with, vibrate with, and resonate deeply with calm, undeniable, and unshakeable confidence, tranquility, and peace.
==>Final Thoughts<==
